Toronto English Country Dance Assembly
Toronto English Country Dance Assembly
Brooke Friendly and Roguery dance weekend, September 30 to October 2, 2022
Brooke Friendly, caller, has been folk and country dancing for more than 40 years and has taught since 1982. She teaches an ongoing English dance class at Southern Oregon University, and co-leads a weekly community dance which includes both English and Scottish country dance. Brooke also calls for contra, community, and family dances. Brooke has been on staff at numerous dance weeks, weekends, festivals, balls, and other events around North America, England, and Australia. In addition, she leads callers’ workshops for English country dance teachers. She and Chris Sackett have devised English and Scottish Country Dances, to increasing international acclaim, since 1996. They have published six books of dances. They have collaborated with the band Roguery to produce CDs of music for the English Country Dances in all six books. Brooke was a founding member of The Heather and the Rose Country Dancers, an Oregon-wide organization promoting English and Scottish Country Dance whose teachers use global/positional terminology (no reference to gender) for teaching and calling.
Live music by Roguery. Roguery is Shira Kammen, Dave Bartley, Anita Anderson, and Jim Oakden, four highly-versatile veteran musicians that have come together to enchant dancers of ECD and contra. Their arrangements range from strictly traditional to soaring flights of imagination and improvisation. They have recorded 6 CDs, and have become favourites at dance camps. The band’s varied influences include English, contra, early music, classical, Breton, Scottish, Irish, Cape Breton, Galician, French, Balkan, jazz-fusion, gospel, Scandinavian, and Greek.
